Imagine this: You’re starting from zero. No followers. No label support. Just you, your laptop, and a dream.
That’s the question we asked Henry Fong during our live Discord Q&A with the Artist Coaching community.
His answer? Surprisingly simple and wildly effective.
Here’s what he’d do.
Step 1: Go All-In on Remixes
Forget chasing label deals from day one. Henry’s first move? Two remixes a month. Every month. Minimum.
Why remixes?
Because people are already searching for the song. It’s easier to ride that wave than create your own tsunami from scratch.
“You remix the right track, make a simple video, boom. 900K views.”
He’d post them on SoundCloud and YouTube. Then use short-form video (think: Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts) to build momentum.
Step 2: Post. Post. Post.
For every remix, he’d make 5–7 videos. Some would flop. Others might take off. Doesn’t matter, you learn either way.
He’s not guessing. He’s testing.
If a remix hits, he’d study why. If it doesn’t, he’d tweak and try again.
“You’re not just building music. You’re building data.”
Step 3: Reuse the Good Stuff
Drums that hit? Use them again. A bassline that works? Copy-paste, then build around it.
This is how signature sounds are born, not by accident, but by repetition.
Bonus: Add Value Before You Ask
Henry didn’t just send demos to big artists.
He snuck backstage by pretending to be a blog writer. Another time, someone took him to a jiu-jitsu class before ever mentioning their music.
That’s how real relationships start. Not with, “Can you check my track?” but with, “How can I help you?”
“It’s like dating. Don’t try to skip to the end on the first night.”
Other Lessons from the Call
- Age isn’t the problem. Risk tolerance is. In your 20s, it’s easier to go all in.
- Writer’s block? Flip an old sample. Lower the bar. Get back in motion.
- Don’t chase trends, build a foundation of signature sounds, then experiment around it.
- Gear will fail. Be ready. (Yes, he once had to DJ an entire set holding down the cue button…)
