The reason why I am writing this blog is because last week I had an encounter with bad track titles. I’m not sure if I’m the only one who is annoyed by this but sometimes it just seems impossible to find a specific song because of the title.

Here are my thoughts on naming your track.

You’ve finished your track and now you need a title to give your baby a name. A lot of producers don’t really think this through and just take the first thing that pops up in their head which leads to a bad track title.

Sometimes it’s obvious, your track includes a vocal and you choose to give it the same title as the main lyrics, that’s understandable. The audience is going to look for the most obvious thing which is normally the vocal (if you track contains vocals).

But what if your track doesn’t contain a vocal?

You still need to fill in the title so what’s the best approach for this?

In my opinion, there are two options, you either choose one that stands out from the crowd or you choose one that is easy to find and is recognizable after you’ve heard the track.

Stands out from the crowd -> Deadmau5 with his album ‘4×4=12’

Easy to find after you’ve heard the track -> Hardwell & KSHMR – Power

Now let’s break this down.

‘4×4=12’ isn’t really the most logical thing to look for when you listen to the album. It does make sense when you see there are 12 tracks on the album but 4×4 still is 16 in my world.

This album title stands out from the crowd, it’s different.

“Being different is more important than being better”

The track title of Hardwell’s “Power” is more logical and mainstream, especially if you listen to the song and hear the vocals. The one word that really sticks with you is the word “power.” Therefore it’s the most logical thing to look for when you’ve heard the track and want to look it up.

It’s pros and cons time!

The pro’s for Deadmau5 his album is that it’s unique. Unlike the title ‘Power’ which is generic. Besides the fact that 4×4=12 is unique, it also fits Deadmau5 his branding.

The cons for Deadmau5 his album is that it’s hard to find if your not aware of the fact that it’s Deadmau5 his album. There isn’t really a connection to one of the songs. Here’s where Hardwell’s ‘Power’ performs better. Ones you’ve heard the track you’re almost 100% sure that if you type in ‘power’ you’ll end up on Hardwell’s account.

So what’s the best way to go here?

That depends on what you think is the best strategy.

I really dig the style of communication and branding from Deadmau5 but I also like the commercial approach from Hardwell. It’s up to you to decide what works best for you.

Jay Hardway recently released a new track called “Coffee Please”. Besides having a track title that stands out he also decided to create a marketing campaign connected to this title.

He created a video clip where you see Jay himself on his journey to find the perfect coffee, he posted videos and photos connected to the track title on his social media pages then he created a remix contest. (Watch:

So by having a title that makes it easier for you to create more content around your release, you are more likely to stand out and have a better chance of selling your track.

The one thing I want you to take away is that a track title is more than just a name. It could affect everything you use in your marketing and communication plans. Don’t just take the first title that comes up in your mind, think things through!

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What additional content could I create with this title?
  • Is the title unique or does it fit the lyrics?
  • Is it easy to find when people google it or search for it in on Spotify?
